Medical benefits of THC and CBD

One of the most exciting, recent discoveries is the effect of CBD in alleviating the symptoms of cancer and the side-effects of treatment, such as pain, nausea and vomiting. A study of 177 people with cancer-related pain who had seen no relief from medication looked at the potential benefits of CBD and THC. Those participants treated with an extract combining both compounds reported a significant reduction in pain compared to those who took only THC extract. There is hope that CBD might also help to lessen chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. These common chemotherapy-related side effects have created a great deal of suffering in patients already weakened by the disease, making treatment an ordeal. While there are conventional drugs available to help lessen these debilitating symptoms, they sometimes don’t work, forcing many people to look for a better alternative. In a recent study of 16 people who were going through chemotherapy proved that a one-to-one ratio of CBD and THC taken orally via a mouth spray reduced the associated nausea and vomiting better than standard treatment alone. There are also indications through animal studies that CBD may provide anticancer properties. In a test-tube study, concentrated CBD caused cell death in human breast cancer cells. A second study indicated that CBD slowed the spread of aggressive breast cancer cells in mice. While further studies in humans are necessary before any conclusions can be drawn, there is reason to hope that a cure of cancer is on the horizon. We can only hope that the promise of scientific research encourages greater acceptance and funding. The potential of medical marijuana has only just begun to be explored. It is truly unfortunate that false propaganda created a stigma surrounding cannabis that has slowed the realization of the many rewards.
