Some Cannabis Basics

While not everyone has heard of cannabinoids and terpenes, they are very important in the world of cannabis. The cannabinoids, such as THC and CBD, are responsible for the effects produced from consuming cannabis. THC is most well-known for causing the psychoactive effects but also offers curative potential. CBD is gaining notoriety for curative properties. It is non-psychoactive and helps to offset some of the negative side-effects of THC. The terpenes are the reason for the distinctive odors and flavors of cannabis strains. However, there is new evidence that suggests terpenes also influence the effects. When the different cannabinoids and terpenes work together to maximize advantages, it is called the Entourage Effect. This is a good reason to purchase full spectrum products. An interesting component is that terpenes and cannabinoids have different boiling points. The various temperatures during the process of heating cannabis flower or oil results in different terpenes and/or cannabinoids to be more bioavailable. A lower temperature setting is always recommended. When shopping for cannabis there are three different categories to choose from. Cannabis Sativa plants are native to warmer climates, tend to grow longer leaves and offer energizing, uplifting and cerebral effects. Cannabis Indica is found mostly in colder climates, features short leaves and typically provides sleepy, calming and more body-focused effects. Hybrids are created from cross-breeding indica and sativa strains. The effects depend on the more dominant parent plant. They are often cultivated to target specific medicinal benefits or sky-high potency. Within these categories are a long list of consumption methods. Loose flower, pre-rolls and vapes are smoked. Cannabis-infused topicals such as lotions, ointments and balms are applied directly to the skin for localized effects. They are often used to combat chronic pain and inflammation and to treat issues such as acne and psoriasis. Edibles and cannabis-infused beverages, tinctures and concentrates are just a sample of options.
